(Preface) 'In 2012 Karel Martens was the recipient of the Gerrit Noordzij prize, awarded once every three years by an expert jury. This book is published on the occasion of an exhibition of KM's work at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in March 2015. It offers a closer look at KM's free work as well as his approach to the teaching of graphic design, both aspects contributing towards his selection for the prize. Comprising a collection of this free work and some more recent applied work, this book also includes two newly commissioned essays: 'Taught.' by David Bennewith examines KM's approach to teaching, through its history and accounts from past students; 'His prints' by Robin Kinross offers a meditation on the free work of KM, which demonstrates a consistent line of investigation through his 54 years of practising graphic design.'
