(Text) 'The intention of this work is to trace the development of letter-shapes from the inscriptional and manuscript forms to modern type-faces. Thus it is neither an alphabet specimen book nor an encyclopaedia, but a work that offers an historical introduction to the study of types for all those who are about to embark or have recently embarked on a study of typography.

The authors examine eleven principal type families. Each section opens with a brief historical survey of the development of letterforms or typography during the period, and a biographical note on the leading designers.

A facsimile spread shows an original usage, and enlarged characters enable the main attributes to be studied. A comparison of complete alphabets, original and derivatives, shows how the designs have developed, and has been made possible by the active co-operation of leading type-foundries throughout the world. Sample text settings and display settings show the workaday performance of the types.

The authors are teachers and working designers. Their approach to the subject is both scholarly and visually exciting. The book will undoubtedly become a standard work of reference, while meeting the immediate requirements of students in the graphic arts.'
