(Preface) 'For more than forty years, the Type Directors Club has encouraged the graphic arts community to achieve excellence in typography through its annual competitions. The only annual devoted exclusively typography, Typography 19 presents the finest work in this field from 1997. Selected from more than 3,000 international submissions the forty-fourth Type Directors Club competition, the 168 winning designs are models of excellence and innovation in contemporary type design. This year's selection encompasses a wide range of categories, including books, magazines, corporate identities, logo-types, stationery, annual reports, video graphics, and posters.

Additionally, this year's volume features the results of the Club's first-ever type design competition, TDC: 33 winners out of 350 international entries. In both categories, each winning entry is displayed in full color and is accompanied by complete information about designer, client, typography, and more. This edition also includes a special index listing the principal typefaces used in the winning entries and the names of the fonts' designers. The Judges' Choice sections feature the winning entries that have been singled out by each of the judges as his or her personal favourite; these pieces are accompanied not only by the judges' comments, but also by statements from the designers themselves about their work and the creative process involved in developing it. These, along with this year's Chairmen's Statements by Richard Wilde, James Montalbano, and Paul Shaw, exemplify the enormous vitality of the typography profession today.'
