(Preface) 'This book contains twenty four interviews with some of the world's most influential typographers. A simple enough statement that belies the complexity of its endeavour. Although we wouldn't want to over dramatise the task, we have crossed continents and climbed aboard aeroplanes with ice laden wings to bring you 'S' book 3. It has always been our intention to interview both the graphic designers who helped create our visual environment and also those who have challenged the hegemony. This year's book is no exception. The process begins with a wish list of the great and good in visual communication. As we contact them one by one we are always amazed by their response. Each year we want 24 designers to take part in the project and each year the first 24 designers contacted invariably agree. We can think of no other profession that would give its time and energy as readily. This is particularly true this year as our primary objective has been to increase the breadth and depth of enquiry. This has resulted in a book nearly twice the size of its previous incarnation. It is a major achievement for an undergraduate programme to create such a book within a single academic year. We would like to thank all of the students, staff, and interviewees involved in this project for their enthusiasm and patience.'
