(Preface) 'Airline safety cards are one of the most collectable and unique sources of everyday information graphics. Design for Impact features the most classic examples, from the first, text-based cards of the 1930s to the meticulously illustrated cards produced for aircraft such as Concorde. The cards display a wide variety of aesthetic approaches, ranging from late-1950s optimism to contemporary graphic minimalism. Far from complying with a universal graphic standard, the cards reflect the culture in which they were produced. Sometimes crudely drawn and difficult to decipher, early cards were not always a reliable source of visual communication-some even show emergency exits in the wrong locations. As well as illustrating the cards, the authors give a brief description of the planes for which the cards were designed. The book will appeal to graphic designers, collectors and aviation enthusiasts.'
