(Foreword) 'Designing Programmes - A compilation of four theoretical publications by Karl Gerstner. Theoretical? Gerstner is a designer. Firstly as a partner in an advertising agency in Basle. Secondly as a maker of pictures. But there is a connecting link between the two roles: instead of seeking individual solutions for problems, he designs programmes for solutions.

Designing programmes means a method and an approach. There are several solutions for each problem, and one of them is the best under certain circumstances. In other words: designing programmes itself means a programme; rooted in practice, however, rather than in a philosophy of life.

To illustrate what exactly it involves in practice is the theme of this book. Hence: it is a very practical introduction for everyone who is interested in problems of contemporary design in the widest sense.

Paul Gredinger has written an introduction to the introduction.'

Includes the bilingual (German and English) brochure 'Variable picture comprising 31 bars' (8 pages, fold-out).
