(Preface) 'The technology of a typewriter is to create a running manuscript. The typewriter stamps out letters equidistantly spaced, to fill a line. Lines fill a single sheet of paper. For longer texts, pages are compiled, conceived as seamless. The word processor quickens the task of writing a running text.

Electronic storage may no doubt replace the book as the warehouse of literature. Technology need not bring the extinction of books, but open the format to the control of the writer. In the last part of this decade, home computers have evolved beyond the word processor with the capability of typesetting and page design: For the first time since printing began, the writer can have control over the look of the published page.

This book is not about typography or graphic design. It is about those possibilities to conceive text which utilizes the space of the page, and the itinerary from page to page, to reinforce the text. The writer can create a book experience.

The computer affords new possibilities for the writer. It also will demand mastery of this writing instrument. Starting with elementary schools instruction on computers must necessarily include taking into account the physical format: the vehicle for words. Writers must learn spacing as well as pacing, and take command of the tools and the page. The next century will not see the extinction of the book format, but bring a renaissance.'
