The magazine functioned as a conceptual art project disguised as a lifestyle title. Eschewing the glossy, aspirational content of traditional media, RE– (or RE-Magazine) focused on the mundane and overlooked aspects of human existence. Its debut, The Home Issue, examined domesticity through raw photography and intimate, first-person narratives. The publication is credited with pioneering the "anti-lifestyle" movement, using minimalist design and a distinctive square format to elevate daily routines into a form of contemporary art.

The premiere issue focused entirely on the concept of "living" and the physical and emotional space of the home:

  • Interior Studies: Unstyled, candid photography of real living rooms and bedrooms, highlighting the clutter and reality of domestic life.
  • Personal Essays: In-depth interviews and writings on the psychological relationship between individuals and their furniture.
  • The Objects of Home: Features on the "insignificant" tools of daily life, such as cleaning supplies and kitchen utensils.
  • Guest Contributors: Early creative work from Dutch photographers and writers who would define the "Dutch Design" aesthetic of the late 90s.
