(Preface) ‘The form of the book is always changing, as we can see from the diversity of material in this volume. It might be difficult to tell, at first glance, how a conventional book might be related to some of the more conceptual works of book art included here. This variety, however, illustrates how strongly engrained our conception of the book really is. Bent out of proportion, burnt, ripped, folded, or otherwise re-created, the examples in this volume are still recognisable as 'books'. Amongst all the kinds of printed matter we can call a standard genre - the poster, the magazine, the business card - isn't 'the book' the strongest one of all?
This volume shows a breadth of work that demonstrates perspectives and possibilities in book design. The work is current and international in scope, and examples are drawn from a wide range of practice. Some of the works are unique pieces produced for clients, or as promotional pieces; others are printed in short runs; others yet are published for the mass mar-ket. Despite the broad range of origins, aims, and outcomes, the examples here all develop the form of the book, interrogate and recreate its conventions, and sometime reject them altogether. There is also an inborn desire to experiment with different aspects of book design in various pieces: whether from the point of cover design, binding, paper, or in the very form of the book itself.’
