(Preface) ‘Drawing letters is quite possibly one of life's most joyful pleasures for a designer at least, it had better be. Even for a non-designer, letters have allure. Letterforms are both abstract and representational. sculptural and painterly. There are infinite ways to draw Latin, Blackletter, Arabic, Hebrew and Cyrillic characters, not to mention the Chinese, Japanese and Korean symbols among the huge number of pictographic forms. Sketching literal forms in unconventional ways challenges the common standards of universal comprehension. Toying with legibility pushes the boundaries of readability. Lettering in the raw is not just instructive, it's fun.
Of course, type is meant to be read or deciphered not just looked at and admired. But reading can be a visceral. as well as an intellectual experience. Often interpreting the letters is as emotional a process as it is cognitive. Naturally, experimental lettering can be distracting if it is employed on a legal document or an instructional guide. Don't try it with a tax form or voting ballot. Yet lettering for so many things, from advertisements and signs to book and magazine texts, might benefit from distinctive, even puzzling, typography.’
