(Preface) ‘This remarkable documentation of the unique mixture of unconscious salesmanship and the sign maker's dubious art is the work of an equally unique talent.

Lee Boltin, born in New York City during the already disturbed times of 1917, was immediately exiled to New Jersey, where he did nothing of note except terminate an undistinguished military career in 1943 by being hit by a machine gun - the whole gun, not a mere shot - in a road accident on a rainy day at Fort Dix. Shortly thereafter, Boltin disappeared into the darkrooms of The American Museum of Natural History. Fourteen years later, he emerged, pallid but expert in the photography of primitive art. He regained normal color during a year in San Francisco the locale of many of these photographs and has since returned to New York City and to his accustomed pallor.’
