(Preface) 'Our interest in enamel signs developed independently in the early 1970s, when as professional artists and designers, we were attracted by the visual qualities of the few remaining signs extant in areas of Tyneside scheduled for demolition. An urge to preserve these artefacts, and a desire to bring together more of a similar nature, eventually led to our being rival collectors trying to obtain the same pieces. An offer from Richard Green, in mid 1976, to allocate space for an exhibition of enamel signs at the Laing Art Gallery, inspired us to pool our efforts and our collections, and to collaborate in this enterprise with renewed enthusiasm. We gathered as many examples as possible into our collection, but soon decided that we preferred to specialise solely in advertising enamels, although we recognised the potential of directional and informational enamel signs as a topic which has yet to be fully investigated. With the curiosity aroused by our activities, we set out to collate documentary information and photographic records, and soon felt that this material had the makings of a full-scale book, rather than a mere catalogue. This work is intended, therefore, not simply as an adjunct to the exhibition (now on national tour) but as the first survey of its kind on the subject, created for the general reader...'
