Before he became one of England’s greatest printers and type designers, John Baskerville (1706–1775) earned his living in Birmingham as a writing-master and letter cutter. This inscription, known as the Baskerville slate, originally hung in the window of his workshop as an advertisement showing five different ‘Hands’ in which he could cut gravestones. Skillfully executed with decorative arabesques, the roman lettering in the second line is a clear forerunner of the noble typeface that would appear in his Virgil of 1757. The only known surviving example of his early work, this is a certified replica published by Birmingham Public Libraries. A wonderful piece of typographic history.
