(Introduction) 'The common theme of the 2013 AGI Congress in London is dialogue. To my ears it's not a particularly charming word in its own right; cold, mechanical and academic, it is perhaps best rephrased for the purpose of this year's Special Project as a conversation. What better excuse to sit down and enjoy a chat over a nice cuppa in the company of friends?
Add a digestive biscuit or a slice of Madeira cake and you have the makings of that very British obsession - the shared ritual of teatime. The anglophile Henry James celebrates this genteel social custom in the opening sentence of The Portrait of a Lady: "Under certain circumstances there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea." While the Barbican Centre can hardly be compared to the acadian lawn of an English country manor, it is nonetheless a gathering place for a group of friends engaged in shared interests and values. AGI Congress is our annual teatime; so it seems apt that this year's brief was to design a teacup and saucer...'
