(Preface) 'The RSA created the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry in 1936, to honour the world's leading designers. Last year our annual report acknowledged our debt to those RDIs who drew some classic typefaces. It is these typefaces that help us to communicate ideas and inspire actions that will undoubtably influence our future.

This year our RIs have made more individual contributions. Study their compositions carefully and you will spot some very old typefaces. Even today, the past is used by the present to introduce the future. It is the transformation of these letterforms that provides us with the theme for this year's annual report. The RIs have taken traditional letters, adjusted them, put them into different contexts, arranged them in unusual compositions, and as a consequence we discover a new message. Likewise, our chairman and director believe strongly that as the RSA approaches its 250th anniversary, it has been the society's ability to transform that has been the key to its longevity.

This continual metamorphosis leads the society towards new answers, just as the rearrangement of letterforms brings new messages. The text face used in this year's report is Gill Sans, designed by Eric Gill (1882- 1940), who was made an RDI in the first year of the Faculty's life.
