(Introduction) 'Edward Burrett FSTD lives surrounded by clockwork friends, each one steadily beating out a reminder of his professional convictions; each one reminding him of a lifetime of typographic challenges. I am honoured to be among the long list of design professionals who know and admire this gentleman of typography. I am gratified that my beliefs echo Edward's stringent principles. I will try to keep these methods to the fore in a profession caught in an age where technology is running away, dragging many designers away with it.

Type must present text clearly. It must not distract by its layout, choice of typeface or decoration. In all bookwork the words are the most important thing. Nothing must come between the author and the reader. Invisible typographic style is the most difficult thing to achieve, yet the skill of the typographer is to influence feelings sensitive to the meaning in the text. This skill is a gift only few practise with success: Edward and the Penmiel Press have been succeeding for twenty years.

This booklet is offered as a tribute to a man whose private press is a byword for quality.' TANIA FIELD, 1995
