This collaborative font design project brought together David Crow of Liverpool Art School and Vakıf Molcho of the Tel Aviv Centre for Design Studies. The project searched for a common form of speech while working within the participants’ existing alphabets. Rather than attempting to erase linguistic or cultural differences, it sought to recognise and celebrate the richness of different languages and cultures. At the same time, the project looked towards what Saussure called a “linguistic community” on the plane of speech. Published by Liverpool Art School, Liverpool John Moores University, and financed by the Liverpool Art School Research Committee, the publication documented this exploration of typography, language and communication across two distinct cultural contexts.
