About: Alan Fletcher, Colin Forbes and Bob Gill opened the doors to Fletcher/Forbes/Gill Ltd in 1962, and quickly became a devastating force in British graphics. Widely considered as the godfathers of modern British design, this scarce portfolio book features the groundbreaking work they produced in 1962 - 1963.
(Foreword) "On the 1st April 1962 we announced the opening of our new design office, Fletcher/Forbes/Gill Ltd. This book is a record of some of the work done during the first year 1962, 1963. Before Fletcher/Forbes/Gill all three of us had freelance practices as graphic designers in London or New York. It was felt there was a need for an organization capable of undertaking problems on a scale that an individual could not tackle. It was also believed that the whole, in reputation, energy and creativity, would be greater than the sum of its parts. We believed too, that within our specific interests and abilities, our organization would be unique and that it could provide a service to industry from total corporate image to individual graphic solutions. Although we have designed theatre sets, television commercials, film titles, packages and exhibitions, we are primarily graphic designers. We feel that any one visual problem has an infinite number of solutions; that these solutions should derive from the subject matter; that we have no pre-conceived graphic style. We have taken the same attitude to the development of our company and have not modelled ourselves on any existing design consultancy. The majority of our clients are industrial organizations, but we also work in close co-operation with some of their advertising agencies."
