(Preface) 'The label plays a unique informational role in the field of graphic design. Its evolution has been largely governed by the exigencies of production and the perfecting of manual and mechanical methods of reproduction.

These different elements are examined in the following brief study, which precedes a visual presentation of thousand different labels from the 17th to the 20th century. Some of the examples present striking similarities or contrasts, and the illustrations have been chosen with this mind, rather than classified according to product, country or period.

This volume is a handbook, which will provide a vast reservoir of creative ideas which can be used in a variety of different ways.'
