(Foreword) 'A new visual identity programme is being introduced to strengthen the worldwide awareness of THORN Lighting. This is an important aspect of our international strategy and is part of THORN EMI's overall drive to achieve a more consistent identity throughout the Group.

The increased awareness it will bring about will impact not only on our customers, employees and suppliers, but also on those other influential groups who favourable opinion can give impetus to our international expansion programme.

It will also overcome the present inconsistent use of various, old identity marks and enable us to exploit the valuable opportunity of building a concerted impression of the size, significance and scope of our activities.

This manual, to be issued section by section, will cover the ways in which the visual identity should be used in different areas of application and is designed to help you to participate in the co-ordinated introduction of the scheme.

The new, visual identity mark is distinctive yet flexible. Therefore there will be no need to depart from, adapt or individually interpret it. To do so will only confuse and diminish our main purpose. Those seeking further guidance should contact the Public Affairs Department at Borehamwood.

I ask that everyone concerned take full advantage of this initiative in support of our strategic international growth objectives.'

Hamish Bryce, January 1990
